These are great John - good work!  It would be cool to see #1 with a blurred background.

Shot number 3 is a Bombus impatiens or Common Eastern Bumble bee! (Guess who just got a new bumble bee field guide?)  Super shot that shows that the first tergal segment or T1 on the back is yellow and the T2 to T5 are dark black and the T6 sting is black.  Super shot! Well done!  Thanks for helping with my bumble bee training!  Cheers Terry

Thanks for the kind comments!

Moira, the hopper with a blurred background would be nice but my photoshop skills are minimal!
This was actually a throwaway shot. I was walking thru tall grass at Col. Sam when I spotted the hopper. I fired off a few shots without even checking my settings and moved on.

Bobo, I'm using a Nikon D5000 with 70-300VR mounted on a shoulder brace.

Thanks, was almost certain you were using some kind of macro lens and ring flash. :)

I will try that sometimes - I have the "almost same" Canon counterpart. Now to see if my eyes will "see".
