Good morning
Yesterday, May 7th Jay Peterson and I birded The Islands and though migration has slowed down temporarily we did find some nice birds.
The Common Terns have returned in numbers to their breeding raft in the Trout Pond on Gibralter Point. This year they are sharing the raft with a Canada Goose on her nest.
Purple Martins and Cliff Swallows have also returned to their breeding areas over there and it is not hard to spot other nesting Canada Geese as well as Mute swans.
As we walked along we found 3 Belted Kingfishers, 7 Downy Woodpeckers, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and 10 Northern Flickers, 11 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Warbling Vireo, singing Winter Wrens, Hermit, Wood and Swainson's Thrushes, 5 singing Brown Thrashers, Yellow, Palm (including a Yellow Palm), Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Yellow-rumped, and Nashville Warblers, Chipping, Swamp, Savannah and White-throated Sparrows as well as singing White-crowned Sparrows and the Baltimore Orioles have returned and announced their selves not only with their singing but with their great colour.
Migration may have slowed but it is far from over, better and more bird filled days are coming.
