For anyone who gets the Ontbird alerts, that was me late this afternoon that posted this sighting. I was pretty shocked when I was driving along down the road and there was a sandhill crane standing at the shoulder. It walked off into a grassy field along the road and we got to sit and look at it for about 10 minutes. I even got out my scope and set it up at the roadside - you could tell from the crane's 'body language' that it had no intention of flying away.
This was a lifetime birding moment for me. I am curious to hear if this is as rare an event as I thought it was, or if others have had infrequent run-ins with sandhill cranes in Southern Ontario.
