Hey gang, hope everyone is doing well these days and enjoying Fall Migration.  Angie and I are looking to make a trek over to Presquille Park in a couple weeks when we are on vacation.

We are looking for suggestions on where to go, trail wise and perhaps a decent place to grab dinner after a day at the park.

We've never been and thought it might be a good idea to finally check it out while we have ample time.

Thanks for any help!

HI Rob

Presquille is a great place in the spring and fall but you may be getting a bit late for some of the migrants now. I would imagine the ducks have started to arrive there, but I know they have controlled duck hunts at certain times so you might want to check these dates with your arrival dates planned. I stayed there the weekend after Labour day and had some good viewings.  We stayed in a great B&B located within the park itself and only 500m from Calf pasture lookout. Right on water with lookout of Presqu'ile bay....would highly recommend to any birders that are planning on visiting park and looking for place to stay.  A good place to start when there would be Owen point trail (  shorebirds) , calf pasture ( a lookout of bay for ducks) and trails around lighthouse. Try 'Friends of Presquille" wed site for bird updates and info on area

Carefully look at Fred's weekly reports on Ontbirds, also search the Ontbird archives over the last few years for the same period - that's what I usually do before any trip.

The Owen point trail is pretty well the best for late fall with the shorebirds, but keep in mind that hunting is allowed on Sat, Mon, Wed and Fri I think, the Owen Pt is closed on those days. You'll likely want waterproof boots, as I remember the trails were quite waterlogged.

If you have hip or even chest waders, you could try to walk out to Gull Island on non-hunting days. It can be quite interesting out there (owls are showing up now), we went out there a few weeks ago, but it was a lot warmer and we could just wear our shorts. It's a lot colder now.

As for restaurants, my wife and I like "Dougall's on the Bay" just about 1 or 2 km east of the park on Harbour St. In town, there's a diner called Rosie's at the corner of Main & Prince Edward, it's cheap and simple but the food is good, and the locals  go there also.

Other than Presquile, consider also Prince Edward County (the bird observatory is at the tip), Brighton Wetlands (just south of the townsite) and Cobourg and Port Hope can be good for waterfowl. The towns are cute too.

Thanks for the info.  Angie gets the ONTbirds email so that helps.  We'll look into the other bits for sure.

yeah, wait for the weekly Presquille reports. you'll know exactly what's there and usually some good details as to where to find it.

i've been twice and saw barred owls both times. they're comical because they look like props put into trees. sometimes its so bloody obvious as to where you'll find them.
