I was out in Edmonton for 2 weeks and did a bit of birding while I was out there. I am posting in case someone may be going that way and wondered if anything was out that way and I will post in this forum as alot of people prefer the bird photo section to stay at Ontario birds only which only makes since. In general, the birding in Edmonton in the winter is very slow as compared to Ontario but a few unusual ones are still to be found.   The 1# bird which is odd and every local hates is the Black-billed magpie and can be found throughout the city.  This is a great bird to watch and it puts on a great show to watch as it flies, alot like a parrot. A fairly large bird and has some nice colour when the light is right.

I also came across a large amount of Bohemian Waxwings which are regular winter visitors to the valley in Edmonton and I saw between 500-1000 within a 1/2 mile area, feeding and drinking snow from the trees. I checked out a number of parks within the city but only saw the following in my 2 days off work there:

Black-capped chickadees
Cardinal
Black-billed magpies
Great Horned Owl
house sparrows
Downy woodpeckers
pigeons

enjoy:

magpie

waxwing

Great stuff! LOOOOOVE the Bohemian Waxwings. Well done. Sure wish we had more of them here. I was in Edmonton last year and the Magpies are everywhere and you're right...local folks do not like them. Can't swing a stick without hitting one. Did you happen to go to the legistlation building and see the Hares that hang around there? Perhaps I'll add some pics here.

Yes, I saw quite a few hares behind capital building in the valley,  surprised to see so many within the city limits. I added one pic in another posting with some animal shots from outside Edmonton

I saw these hares in front of the Edmonton legistlation. There were about five in all. The first one I saw had me stop and try to figure out if they were real.
