Birders seem to have thick skins, needed to withstand hours outdoors in all forms of weather and comments like this, appearing in an online publication called the Toronto Standard:
"Bird watching is an effectively "dorky" sport." Leaving aside the questionable grammar, and the assertion that birding is a sport (I guess that makes us athletes?), it seems the writer meant this to be affectionate so no offense should be taken. The good news is that we could actually soon be hip! thanks to the film she mentions: "The Central Park Effect." (follow the link to see the trailer)
