The bird was much larger than a crow - brown/grey - raven like beak.  It was resting for a couple of minutes on top of a tall evergreen with a large twig in the beak.  Raven was what it looked like.  Any other ideas ?

A Raven should be black. The only large brown/grey birds sitting in trees I can think of are raptors and owls, but the beak doesn't fit.
