Of the 8 different species of owl that I've seen, I would have to say that the Northern Hawk-owl was the most strikingly beautiful.  Would love to see a Great Gray!!!  Cutest owl is the Eastern Screech-owl.

Walter you have to leave the bluffs to see a great gray.

I saw the remains of a roadkill Great Gray sw of bancroft on saturday. It looked to have got hit between dec 31 and jan3 and deposited by  snowplow in the snowbank. Melting snow revealed its remains. There are live ones out there in central ontario but you have to put the KMs on your car and go looking after 4pm. That is when most come out to start hunting for the night

As for favorite owls. For Ontario It is definitely Great Gray for me. For all I have seen, It would be the Northern Pygmy Owl of western north america and the Powerful Owl of Australia

MC2

The Owl was on Brimley rd. about half way down the hill towards the lake. Today I saw the owl three different times, all on the west side of the road (what a site). I hope he-she is able to find lots of food and sticks around for awhile. This is the third owl that I have seen in the wild. I have seen hawks, deer, fox, beaver, anyway I just wanted to say that the wild life at bluffers Park is great and its in the city. Sorry for yapping so much. I am now a Gray fan. I will look for Mr gray tomorrow.

So it is possible, eh?

Yes it is possible, anything is possible ......

However 2004 Grey Gray irruption was a once in a lifetime maybe twice in a lifetime event. There were days when I could 20+ in durham region in less than 4 hrs. 100s died that winter. Hell GGs showed up everywhere even in the GM Factory compound in Oshawa. Almost in the paint shop.    There were even on the spit that year.
Hell I had several on my property that winter.. they were more common than cardinals.

So yes anything is possible, but is it probable is the really the question. With the build up of Toronto I do not see one in south scarberia again  till the next massive irruption. the next normal irruption I would look around ressor road and claremount for the closest one.

On years like this one (non irruption year) you have to get to the edge of the shield to have a chance. And that chance is about as good a chance as me seeing that damn Screech owl of yours. Been to that park twice this winter with no luck.  :x

As for photogenic Owls, I like the Barred owls with Short-eared owls a close second.

I might change my mind if I get a co-operative Burrowing owl. Apparently, they have some fun antics.

Egret ... they're all beautiful.  :D

I especially love seeing Snowy Owls and having seen Barn Owls (sadly, it's been years since sighting one of these owls).

Agree 100% with Walter ... Eastern Screech Owls are definitely the cutest!

Egret ... Yes, except for the Barn Owl.  First sighting was at night many years ago just South of Sarnia.  Owl flew across the windshield, looked right at me and let loose with a blood curdling scream!!!  Scared the heck out of me and the driver almost went off the road!     Looks exactly like a ghost.   2nd sighting was also at night many years ago during nightly entertainment at a resort in Varadero, Cuba.  The owl was SO silent, I didn't even hear him coming - he flew right in front of me and I could feel the wingtips brush against my face.

I've seen Snowy Owls, Long-eared Owls, Great Horned Owl and Eastern Screech Owls during the daytime.

the owls that spend most of their time up near the tundra, where the days are very long during the summer, have no choice but to hunt during the day.

I have to chime in as I am another that thinks Owls
are awesome. It was Hawks & Owls that got me into
birding along with all the really fine people I
have met an learned from. (Thanks Frank, Walter, Ann, Lee & many more)
I have been fortunate to see quite a few Owls over the
last 3 years. My favorites would have to be the Baby Owls.
One was a baby Screech & the other a baby Great Horned.
They are just furballs & a special treat to see.
They will make you smile & laugh!!

Happy Owling!!!!
